Victorian Sea Glass Bubble Earrings on Leather
Somewhere on a beach in northern England, the ocean spent a century polishing these for you.
Each earring carries a single genuine sea glass bubble from Seaham, County Durham, in northern England. These are not decorative beads. They are fragments of Victorian and Edwardian glass, produced between 1853 and the early 1920s at the Candlish Bottleworks, a glass foundry built on the cliffs above the North Sea. The factory made bottles, vases, and homewares in every color imaginable, using materials like selenium, arsenic, and even gold and uranium to achieve specific hues and clarity. When production ended, the remnants were cast into the sea.
Over a century of waves did the rest. What washes ashore today at Seaham beach, the only place on earth where this glass can be found, are perfectly tumbled, frosted fragments shaped by more than a hundred years of salt water and sand. Each piece is unique. Each piece is irreplaceable. When the supply is gone, it is gone forever.
The two bubbles on these earrings were hand selected for their translucence, their shape, and their soft, luminous surface. They are mounted on hand rolled premium kangaroo leather with traditional sailor knots, hanging from sterling silver hooks. The construction is deliberately light and organic. The glass moves gently with every turn of the head, catching light the way only century old glass can.
At $200, these are the most accessible entry into genuine Victorian sea glass jewelry. They carry over a century of ocean history on a pair of silver hooks. Nothing else at this price comes with that kind of provenance.
Made to order. Each pair is assembled from hand selected sea glass fragments, so expect natural variations in size, shape, and translucence that make your earrings unlike any other pair.
